History
The Epic of Rhodekill
By Jen Rich
Once upon a time, four score minus a lot of years ago on a cold, dark stormy night in Memphis, the campus of Rhodes College was eerily quiet. Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse… and other examples of allusions to overused narrative descriptors were occurring. In the midst of all of this, our unsuspecting prophet, a young freshman by the name of Samuel Weems, lay restless in his bed, tossing and turning, unable to shake an unsettling feeling in the pit of his stomach. Though it was quite possible it was just the chicken fried steak he had gotten from the RAT for dinner, Sam still felt that the restless feeling was due to something bigger….something more important. He had felt that feeling before- a kind of urging that told him he was called to a greater purpose than biology at Rhodes College, but he just couldn’t put his finger on it. Out of ideas, he was just about to throw off his sheets and commence the obligatory pumping of his fist into the air and cursing of the heavens when he heard a voice next to his bed.
“Hey….hombre…..si….I’m talking to you.”
Startled, Sam looked over to see a small purplish creature that resembled a monkey wearing a jersey peering at him with a Cheshire cat smile from the side of his bed.
“Are…are you a crackhead?” Sam stammered, glancing nervously at his open window.
“No, I’m Hecho. Well, Hecho en Mexico is my proper name….that is all you need to know”
“Wait….your name is “Made in Mexico?”
“I said that’s all you need to know. Let it go, ok? Now, let’s get down to business…. What? No, I don’t have candy inside me…what the hell kind of question is that? Okay, now focus. I have been sent to lead you on a quest for the Holy Grail of an Ultimate Frisbee Championship. I won’t lie to you. It will be an arduous journey, paved with defeats and bruises and broken bones and hippie stoners, but there will be good times too. There will be victories and spectacular layouts and turkey….yes my friend, there will be much turkey. And I will be with you for every step of the way. I will be your Yoda…your Sensei….your Mr. Belding of sorts if you choose to accept this task.”
After some deliberation (an internal game of eenie meenie miney moe), Sam agreed to join Hecho on this quest and a legend was born.
Their first task was to begin recruiting an army to take into battle with them. Among those first brave soldiers were Doug the Great, Lauren the Small but Wiley, Phillip the Incredible Stretching Man, Carson the Intimidator, Eric the Swift, and a Frisbee ninja. Surveying his newly formed troupe, Hecho thought for a moment and then declared “I shall call you Rhodekill” And it was made so. And there was much rejoicing.
And thusly began the Epic of Rhodekill and the Quest for an Ultimate Frisbee Championship. As promised, Rhodekill encountered much pain and suffering in its early days as it traveled to the far off and exotic lands of Birmingham and Nashville and Huntsville. There were savage tournaments, there were seedy motels, there were bones that were broken….in multiple places….resulting in loud, disgusting cracks….for real Doug, it was gross….but I digress. However, there were the good times of narrow victories and amazing layout catches and there was turkey….oh yes, there was turkey.
The team only grew stronger as the years passed. Sporting shiny new uniforms, Rhodekill traveled to more far-off lands and fought in even more battles….even winning some of them! The early soldiers were forced to move on, but the mission held true as new recruits joined the army including such leaders as Carl the Ferocious, Jen the Layout Pantser, Becca the German, Richard and Allen the Ambiguously Gay Duo, Stan the Man, Andrew the Naked, Yuhki the Tree-Hugger, Dan the Large, Rachel the Climber of All Objects, Bethany the Silverware Defiler, and many other dedicated soldiers who are not mentioned, but who served valiantly. With each new generation, the original quest given to Sam was passed on and the tradition grew stronger. The cardinal rules were never broken; 1) that fun should be held in higher esteem than victory and 2) that Rhodekill should consistently pass out from exhaustion and fail to attend a single post game celebration. And it was good.
And the legend lives on as the battle still rages today. Slightly weathered, his ribcage exposed in places, his once vibrant fur missing in patches and with significantly less pigment, Hecho still serves as the fearless leader for Rhodekill in its quest for an Ultimate Frisbee Championship, leading his team in regular training sessions whether in sunshine, rain, mud, snow, sleet, or tsunami on the manicured fields of Buckman. With each passing year, the team gets closer and closer to this goal, refusing to give up, knowing that someday, sooner than one might think, the coveted Championship will be brought to Hecho. And there will be much rejoicing and much annexing of Puerto Rico.
